TfL English Language Requirement
Transport for London’s English Language Requirement will start from 30 April 20189. If you have applied for a Private Hire Licence or Renewed your existing Private Hire Licence at any time from 14th October 2016, you’ll need to provide evidence of English Language to TfL. If you are applying or renewing after this date, then you will need to provide the evidence with your private hire application.
What Qualifications will be accepted?
Transport for London has confirmed that any of the qualifications below will meet their English Language Requirement:
- UK GCSE grades A to G
- UK O level grades A to E
- UK CSE grades 1 to 5
- UK AS level/A level
- UK NVQ/BTEC/City and Guilds qualification level 1 or above
- UK HNC/HND
- UK degree or higher (e.g. master’s, PhD)
- ESOL Skills for Life (Entry Level 3, Level 1, Level 2)
- Functional Skills qualifications in English (Entry Level 3, Level 1, Level 2)
Transport for London will consider documentary evidence from applicants who have a non-UK qualification at the equivalent of GCSE level or above which was taught and examined in English. These applicants will be required to provide TfL with their original certificate of having obtained the qualification and satisfactory evidence that the qualification was taught and examined in English, this can be in the form of a letter from the teaching/examining institution.
